The alarm went off at 3:40 AM. By four we were lacing up boots in the dark, headlamps bobbing, the air cool enough to need a jacket — a rare feeling in Kerala.
The first hour is all forest and switchbacks. Then the trees thin, the sky begins to bruise pink, and suddenly you're above the clouds looking down on a valley you can't quite believe is real.
We reached the heart-shaped lake just as the sun crested the ridge. For a full minute, nobody said anything.
What we learned
- Start before dawn — the crowds and the heat both arrive by 9 AM
- Carry more water than you think you need
- A local guide knows which trail is open; conditions change fast
Chembra isn't the hardest trek in Wayanad, but catching it at sunrise turns a nice hike into a memory you'll bring up at dinner parties for years.
