Kayaking looks intimidating from the shore, but it's one of the most beginner-friendly water activities out there. With an hour of guidance you'll be paddling confidently — here's how to make your first time a good one.
What to wear
- Quick-dry clothes you don't mind getting wet
- A hat and reef-safe sunscreen
- Water shoes or sandals with a heel strap
- Leave the cotton and the phone on shore
The one technique that matters
Beginners paddle with their arms and tire out in ten minutes. The trick is to rotate your torso and let your core do the work — your arms just hold the paddle. Your instructor will drill this in the first five minutes, and it changes everything.
Nobody remembers the wobble at the start. They remember gliding across still water with nothing but the sound of their own paddle.
Book a calm-water session for your first outing, go with a certified instructor, and you'll be amazed how quickly nervousness turns into that quiet, addictive rhythm.
